That was part of a sign on today’s Crime March on City Hall, but it could be the slogan for so much of New Orleans, Post-K.
I’m sure you’ve seen the news…we’re going through a rough patch here in the Big Uneasy…but there’s a silver lining, believe it or not, and it’s us.
Us as in ‘we the people.’ New Orleanians both new and old have been a pretty laid back bunch; our politics really isn’t necessarily any more corrupt or bizarre than yours, but we do tend to look at it as sport. Few of us have been very involved at a grass-roots level…until now.
I think They were shocked today- all those bigshots at City Hall are used to precious little public oversite, and the look on Nagin’s face as he kept trying to take the microphone from the speakers only to be told to keep quiet and listen for once was beyond priceless.
Will this rally get us anywhere? Who can say- but together with Citizens for One Greater New Orleans, Women of the Storm, Common Ground, Common Good, Rising Tide and so many others out there, we’ll stay hopeful, involved and work to keep ‘em honest.
So anyway, our neighborhood contingent merged with the Central City group(one of the hardest hit crime areas) …that’s our new phenominal & tireless city council woman Stacy Head out front with the sign…
Arriving at City Hall, we were cheered like the homecoming team- it was amazing. This was the biggest banner, and the one many reports focused on.
Looking for Alison, I literally bumped into Anderson Cooper with his frowny-serious face on. I know I shouldn’t make fun- he’s done much to publicize the city’s issues, but he was ridiculous. He was walking around, looking like he was all on his own, considering the weighty implications, being a Man of the People…and being followed and filmed from two different angles to make sure they got a good shot.
We just couldn’t get any closer to the podium than this- which was a great thing. However, my pushy daughter and her classmates got right up close and glare-y, which is kind of ironic- the mayor’s little girl goes to her school, so seeing the same uniform he sees every day must’ve been a little awkward. I’d like to think it made him just a little more uncomfortable.
