I passed Six Flags last week, on my way out to one of our suppliers. It’s been closed since Katrina, but the sign still sits out on I-10, abandoned and sadly decomposing in the summer heat.
I never really think about the place- one of their big problems was that not many people thought about them even when they were open. Running an amusement park outside of a city that’s a) largely poor and b)has free parties going on every day is a tough slog. Six Flags was looking for a way out well before Katrina; the hurricane just sped things up.
Nevertheless, it’s always sad to see that kind of rack and ruin. With so many other stories of loss out there, I can’t say I’ve ever shed a tear for this place, but it’s hard not to look at it and think of all the kids who might be out there having fun.
I had to pull off the highway to check a tire, and found myself staring straight at the place. A summer storm was coming in, and it was all desolate and overgrown. We just might have to go back and explore a little more at some point. But for now, here are a few pics just from the entrance, & one of what it was like just after Katrina:
