Still cleaning up from the barge spill

During my little summer break we had a crash on the Mississippi when someone on the tugboat Mel Oliver thought it would be a brilliant idea to let an unlicensed pilot take the wheel at 1:30 in the morning.

The upshot was 280,000 gallons of fuel oil dumped into the River and nearly that many headaches in the area from the fumes. Thankfully it doesn’t seem like very much long term damage was done.

The accident happened just as I was leaving for a trip to NY, but when I got back they were still working on containing it. It was pretty interesting, actually- many small boats motored around the river, dragging floats behind them to corral the spill while another boat’s conveyor belt drew the sludge up and out of the water.

They finally were able to get the barge removed from the water about a week ago, and the ferries are running again.
