Antoine’s Café Brûlot Diabolique

Alison chose (with a tiny bit of prodding from Charlie) Antoine’s for her graduation night dinner. Usually we go to Commander’s Palace for big celebrations, but since we started rating our own waiter, our loyalties have shifted just a bit.

For those of you who live someplace sane, I should explain that having your “own” waiter in one of the big, old-line New Orleans restaurants is a huge deal. It’s somebody who remembers your preferences, has your drink ready for you upon your arrival, and generally makes you feel like a bigshot. Silly? Absolutely. Ego-driven? No doubt. Still damn cool? Totally!

Normally, you have to go to a place dozens of times to rate your own waiter, building up a rapport over the course of many thousands of dollars. We totally cheated and were ‘given’ Charles by a friend who works there and set us up. (Thanks again, B!)

After dinner, one of the many grace notes we were treated to was Antoine’s “Devil’s Coffee”- largely because Ali was pining for some Bananas Foster-type flames. It was an especially wonderful gesture from Charles because the kitchen was long closed by this time.

She sure got ‘em: Devils Coffee at Antoine's

Antoine’s helpfully has the recipe on their site, but I’d recommend having a professional do it for you instead if possible. I’m sure it’ll taste better, and you’ll be able to enjoy the show instead of just worrying about catching the drapes on fire.

Very well written. I agree the experience of the Devil’s coffee has a unique charm in Antoine’s. Do you know anyplace that sells the cups?
    Thanks
